The fairest brew decider

Brew
Duty

Settle it fair and square.
Then get the kettle on.

Seven games decide who's making the round — played across everyone's phones, or by passing one handset round the desks. Then the full order becomes a checklist you tick off at the kettle.

How it works

From "whose round
is it?" to the kettle

Set up once, then it's a ritual that takes under a minute — and nobody has to keep a tally in their head.

1

Round up your crew

Start a crew and you get a code like BREW-K7F3QX. Share it round the office; everyone joins from their own phone. No sign-up, no password.

2

Call a brew round

Tap Call a brew round and the whole crew gets a notification. They've got two minutes to tap "I'm in" — latecomers miss out.

3

Play, then brew

Pick one of seven games. One name comes out, and the loser gets everyone's order as a checklist to tick off while the kettle boils.

Two ways to play

Everyone's phone,
or just the one

A toggle at the top of the game picker switches between them. Same games either way.

📱 Everyone plays

Live, across the room

Everyone plays from their own handset and the round stays in sync over iCloud. Secret picks stay secret, reaction times are measured on your own phone so lag can't cheat anyone, and the whole crew watches the result land at once. Works just as well when half the crew is at home.

🤝 Pass this phone

One handset, round the desks

Only one person has the app? Pass the phone round and take your turns on the same screen. Some games are built for exactly this — Pass the Bomb only ever runs on one device, and the others hide your choice before they hand over.

Seven ways to settle it

How shall we
settle it?

Every game is properly random or properly even-handed — never a stitch-up. Pick whichever suits the mood of the office that morning.

🎡 Roulette Wheel

Wheel of Woe

Spin for a victim.

Everyone in the round gets a slice. The host spins, the wheel slows, and wherever it lands — they're brewing. Everyone else watches it happen live on their own screen.

  • One slice per person, so it's genuinely even
  • The crew sees the same spin at the same time
  • "Wherever it lands, they're brewing."

SPIN THE WHEEL
🪙 Spoof

Guess the coins

Everyone hides 0–3 coins. Guess right and you're safe.

The proper pub classic. Hide coins in your fist, then call your guess at the grand total — and each number can only be called once, so the later you go the harder it gets. Guess it exactly and you're out of the running. Rounds repeat until one poor soul is left.

  • Every pick is submitted secretly from your own phone
  • "anywhere from 0 to 12 · each number once"
  • Correct guessers walk — last one standing brews

⚡ Quick Draw

Slowest finger brews

Jump the gun and it's you.

Every phone waits a random beat, then flashes TAP! at once. Slowest reaction makes the drinks — but twitch too early and it's a false start, which loses outright. Times are measured on your own handset, so a dodgy office wifi can't cost you the round.

  • "wait for it…" then "orange means go"
  • Results rank 🥇 fastest through 🐌 slowest
  • False starts lose on the spot — no arguments

⚡ Quick Draw

TAP!

Slowest finger brews.

💣 Pass the Bomb · 1 phone

Don't hold it

Secret fuse. Hold the phone, hold the risk.

Light the fuse and pass the handset round the circle. Nobody knows how long it's got — somewhere between eight and twenty-two seconds — and whoever's holding it when it goes bang is on brew duty. The rest of the crew watches from their own phones.

  • Deliberately one-device: the panic is the point
  • "The bomb's on Dave's phone — gather round! 🍿"
  • Ends with a very satisfying BOOM.

🥤 Short Straws

Pick your poison

One of these is short. Choose wisely.

A fist of identical straws with one short one hidden in it. Everyone pulls, either on their own phone or by passing one round — and nothing is revealed until the last straw is out. Then they all open at once.

  • "✊ no peeking ✊" until everyone's pulled
  • Simultaneous reveal — "The moment of truth…"
  • The oldest tiebreaker there is, done properly

🎲 Random Pick

Fate Decides

One name. No arguments.

For when the kettle's already boiled and nobody has time for a wheel. Names rattle past like a fruit machine, slow to a crawl, and stop on one person. Done in seconds.

  • The fastest way to end it
  • Straight, even odds across everyone in the round
  • Just enough of a slowdown to build the dread

⭕ Tic Tac Toe · 2P duel

Head to head

Loser brews. Draws? Middle square loses.

The one game where you can actually save yourself. Pick two people to duel and they fight it out — on two phones with the rest of the crew spectating, or both on one handset. Best of one, or best of three if you fancy your chances.

  • Duel across two phones, or pass one back and forth
  • Best of 1 sudden death, or best of 3
  • No endless draws — whoever holds the centre loses

The verdict is in

Then it's a list,
not an argument

One name fills the screen with confetti and a bit of good-natured abuse — "Get the kettle on, Dave!" · "The tea gods have spoken." · "Milk and two, cheers pal."

Underneath sits the whole order as a checklist you tap as you brew. Each drink strikes through as it's made, so you can put the phone down mid-round and pick up exactly where you left off. No more carrying five orders in your head.

Hit Logged it and the scoreboard updates for the whole crew. Or Rematch, if someone fancies double or quits.

History

"Every brew, on the record." The last thirty rounds, who brewed and when. Anyone who's left the crew shows up as 👻 a departed brewer.

Your crew

Round up the office
with one code

Start a crew and Brew Duty hands you a six-character code, built from letters that can't be misread across a desk — no O against 0, no I against 1. Share it however you like and everyone joins from their own phone.

No sign-ups, no email addresses, no passwords — it syncs over your iCloud account, so there's no Brew Duty login to forget. Pick a name, pick a mug from twelve characters, set your usual, and you're in.

Only one of you so far? Recruit Brew Bot 🤖 and try the games with a stand-in until the rest of the office catches up.

The details

Small things that
make it work

📣

The two-minute call

Calling a round notifies the crew and opens a two-minute window to opt in. Whoever taps "I'm in" is in the draw; latecomers miss out. Or skip the call-out and start right now.

📬

The Monday digest

A nudge every Monday morning — "7 rounds last week. Dave brewed 3 — raise a mug. ☕" Or, if it's gone quiet, "Someone's dodging duty… 👀"

🎭

Twelve mugs to pick from

Fox, frog, panda, unicorn, octopus, bee, whale, koala, lion, penguin, turtle or dinosaur — each with its own colour. That's your face around the office.

Nobody holds up the round

Someone wandered off mid-game? Play their turn for them and the round carries on. No round ever stalls because one person put their phone down.

📤

Share the invite

Send the code straight from the app, or just tap to copy it. Joining from a code on your clipboard? Brew Duty spots it and pastes it for you.

Free, and properly free

No subscription, no paywall, no premium tier, no ads. Every game and every feature is there from the moment you install it.

Questions

Before you ask

When can I actually get it?
Brew Duty is in development, with a TestFlight beta coming soon and an App Store release to follow. Pop your name down for early access and you'll get the TestFlight invite as soon as there's something to try.
Does everyone need the app?
Not necessarily. In Everyone plays mode each person joins the crew on their own phone. But there's a Pass this phone mode for when only one of you has it — take turns on the same handset. Pass the Bomb is built exclusively for that.
Do I need to make an account?
No. There's no Brew Duty sign-up, no email address and no password. Crews sync through your iCloud account instead, so your phone just needs to be signed into iCloud — the same as your photos or notes.
Can we play if we're not in the same room?
Yes. Rounds run live across everyone's phones, so a half-remote crew works fine — the wheel spins on every screen at once and the result lands for everybody together. The exception is Pass the Bomb, which by design needs one shared handset.
Is it actually random, or does it pick on people?
Properly even. The wheel gives every person an identical slice, Random Pick has flat odds, and Short Straws is a straight draw. Spoof and Quick Draw come down to your own guessing and reflexes, and Tic Tac Toe is pure skill — that's the point of it.
What if there's only two of us?
Everything works with two. The Tic Tac Toe duel skips the "pick two players" step and goes straight to the board. And if you're the only one with it so far, recruit Brew Bot 🤖 to try the games out.
Can I change my drink?
Two ways. Edit your saved usual from your profile whenever it changes, or override it for a single round from the game screen — handy when you fancy a hot chocolate on a Friday without rewriting your default.
Will it cost anything?
No. Brew Duty is free — there's no subscription, no premium tier and no in-app purchases. Everything you've read about on this page is in the app from day one.

Brew Duty is coming to iPhone. Put your name down and we'll send you the TestFlight invite the moment the beta opens.
